NRA Vendor Sells An Ex-Girlfriend Target That Bleeds When You Shoot It:

i try to be careful about the things i get outraged about these days, and i think i’ve done a fairly good job at doing so, but selling a woman who you can shoot and calling it the “ex-girlfriend” doll is probably one of the most harmful, disturbing things i’ve heard in a long time.

because this is a very. very. real thing.

but, why?

because in the united states alone, every single day more than three women are murdered their ex-boyfriends or ex-husbands.

that’s at least 21 dead women a week.

that’s at least 84 dead women a month.

because one in every four women have been beaten by their boyfriends or husbands.

because half of women who report rape were raped by their boyfriend, husband or partner. and those are just the rapes that are reported.

because the NRA sells an ex-girlfriend doll that bleeds when you shoot at it.

because organizations like the NRA encourage the use of women as target practice.

and yet, things like this are still for sale, because even though your mom or your friend or your sister or your girlfriend or even just the girl you kissed at that party has certainly experienced some sort of horrifying trauma, companies and organizations can still turn a profit by turning their heads.

this affects you.

these are not women’s issues.

these are your issues.

acknowledge that.

and then, speak up.

the best thing you can do is to stop being silent, to stop bystanding and to stop letting these issues exist in “gray areas”. bring them into light.

where we stand today, this is not an issue that makes national news, because it’s not shocking. which is 99% of the problem. that, until you consider these issues in context - of the statistics, of the people you know - it’s just frankly not that shocking.

the best thing you can do is not to be numb.

and to speak up.

and say no more.

w/my tentmate, the italian named antonio, in peru.

we both liked solving riddles (which are even better when you are trying to piece them together in 3 languages). he loved sad italian films and german philosophers, which i thought contradicted one another, but then i realized i dislike both sad italian films and german philosophers so, in addition to being a hypocrite, i’m just as much of a contradiction. i like to think that i came to this realization myself, but really, it was antonio who noted it with that same grin on his face that he has in this picture.

i think about him when i walk alone and wonder if his pack kept getting lighter, if his lungs feel any better and if he ever solved any of the real riddles he set out to untangle.
